What is Pokemon Quetzal?
Pokemon Quetzal began in 2020 under the name Pokemon Emerald Multiplayer, following Tenma’s research into GBA multiplayer. It combines familiar regional adventures with a larger Pokemon roster, newer battle mechanics and optional cooperative play.
You can choose from more than 70 starters, select a human character or play as a Pokemon, and have up to six Pokemon follow you. Game modes and difficulty settings let you choose how to approach your adventure without requiring other players.
How to Play Pokemon Quetzal
Pokemon Quetzal is a GBA game, not a standalone Android app or PC program. You need the game file and a compatible GBA emulator.
- Open the download page and choose the current Pokemon Quetzal release.
- When using the creator’s patcher, supply your own legally obtained, compatible Pokemon Emerald (USA) ROM, select Pokemon Quetzal and choose a language.
- Open the patched game in your GBA emulator to start playing.
The creator’s emulator recommendations include mGBA for Windows, macOS and Linux, Pizza Boy GBA or My Boy! Lite or Lemuroid Emulator for Android, and Delta for iOS. Check multiplayer support separately when choosing an emulator.
Story and Regions
You can start in Kanto, Johto or Hoenn. All three regions are complete, with three different Pokemon Leagues to finish.
Kanto
Kanto follows the story of Pokemon FireRed, including its islands.
Johto
Johto follows the Johto adventure from Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
Hoenn
Hoenn follows Pokemon Emerald. The journey begins in Littleroot Town with Professor Birch and your starter Pokemon. You travel through the region, challenge its Gym Leaders and face Team Aqua and Team Magma on the way to the Pokemon League.
Each region has its own complete National Pokedex, and you can catch the full roster in each one. For example, there is a Mewtwo in Kanto, another in Johto and another in Hoenn.
Key Features
1. Pokemon Through Generation 9, Plus Generation 10 Starters
All Pokemon from Bulbasaur through Pecharunt can be caught, including Arceus. The Generation 10 starters are also included. Regional forms include Alolan, Galarian and Hisuian Pokemon.
2. More Than 70 Starter Options
You can choose from more than 70 starter Pokemon at the beginning of your adventure.
3. Up to Six Following Pokemon
Choose anywhere from zero to six Pokemon to follow you. The follower system covers Generations 1 – 9 and forms such as regional variants, Mega Evolutions, Gigantamax forms and Ash-Greninja. Shiny Pokemon use their shiny appearance, and followers also work in multiplayer.
4. 113 Characters and Battle Helpers
Choose from 113 human characters, including Red, Ash, Professor Oak, Cynthia, Leon and Nemona. Pokemon themselves can also be selected as playable characters.
The same 113 characters are available as helpers. Each has a different team, and you can ask them to help in battle.
5. Optional Multiplayer for Up to Four Players
See other players moving around the map, trade from anywhere, and challenge each other to single, double or multi battles. You can also team up against the game’s trainers, including Gym Leaders.
Multiplayer battles support Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Dynamax, Gigantamax and Terastallization. Playing with others is optional; the game can also be played by one person.
6. Modern Battle Mechanics
The battle system and items are updated through Generation 9. Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Dynamax, Gigantamax and Terastallization are included, along with Mega Evolutions from Pokemon Legends Z-A.
7. Expanded PC Storage and Daycare
The PC has 67 boxes with 30 slots each, providing 2,010 Pokemon storage slots. The bag is practically unlimited.
The redesigned daycare accepts up to six Pokemon and is accessed through the PC. Pokemon placed there appear on the map. A separate box holds up to 30 eggs, which do not need to occupy party slots to hatch.
8. Game Modes, Difficulty and Shiny Settings
Available game modes include Normal, Random, Cheats and Nuzlocke. Choose from five difficulty levels: Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard and Very Hard.
Every Pokemon has three shiny variants, described as radiant Pokemon. The shiny/radiant probability settings are Very Low, Low, Normal, High, Very High and Always.
9. Visible Wild Pokemon and Everyday Improvements
Wild Pokemon appear on the map. You can rematch trainers repeatedly and teach new moves through a move tutor in the party menu. Items and berries respawn, and HMs are not required.
